Camp Next Week

We have a Fillies camp session next week. If you or someone you know is interested in signing up, please call Firefly Farm at 517-242-6670.

Summer Camp at Firefly Farm is perfect. We play with horses all day in various ways.

These photos are from previous summer camps I ran at Hell Creek Corral at Hell Creek Ranch. This summer, when we have the opportunity to hold a camp at my personal barn, the price will be less expensive ($180 per child, per session) and the time will be longer (8:30am-3:30pm.) Every child has their own horse for an entire week (Monday through Friday.)

This day camp is not for children who have a passing fancy in horses–this is for true horse lovers. We do chores, play games with the horses, and ride. Not every activity will be a riding activity, but everything we do will be completely centered around horses in some way. We don’t have swimming or archery–we have horses.

There’s fun homework every night–usually a worksheet related to what we learned during the day, and sometimes there’s a research project. The kids learn as if they’re in school because this camp is run by a certified teacher.

Summer Camps

Foals–for kids 8-11:

One Session only: July 23-25. 8:30am-3:30pm.  $180.

This camp is specially made for kids who love horses but have no experience. We start off slow, learning how to safely approach a horse; then how to groom, saddle, and bridle a horse. Afterward we discuss English vs. Western riding, how to ride bareback, and what to do in emergencies. We also have fun horse-related trivia. It is mandatory that the camper have at least one private lesson before camp begins so the instructor can place the camper with an appropriate horse.

Fillies–for kids 11-13:

First Session: July 9-13. 8:30am-3:30pm. For more advanced Fillies who have taken lessons previously. $180.

Second Session: August 13-17. 8:30am-3:30pm. For beginning Fillies who have had few or no lessons. $180.

This camp is made for kids who are ready to move at a faster pace. We breeze through grooming, saddling and bridling (don’t worry–we help each other) and move on to more exciting features of riding. This camp explores vaulting (at a walk,) bareback riding (at a trot) and the beginning stages of jumping. We ride both English and Western, and have the opportunity to go on a trail ride in the meadow. It is mandatory that the camper have at least one private lesson before camp begins so the instructor can place the camper with an appropriate horse.

Mustangs–for kids 12-15

Only Session: August 6-10. 8:30am-3:30pm. For advanced kids who have taken lessons, or those who are just horse-crazy.

This camp is made for kids who learn fast and work hard. Horse-crazy kids are the kind we want for these sessions. We’re going to ride in many styles of saddles: English, Western, Australian Stock Saddle, Side-Saddle, Racing Saddle, Saddleseat, and Vaulting Surcingle. We’ll head out to the meadow and play some games with our horses, then learn how to teach tricks such as the Spanish Walk, standing on a Pedestal, bowing, saying “Yes” and “No,” and leading by the tail. Don’t be spooked by all of the above–beginning riders are welcome in this camp, but it is mandatory that the camper have at least one private lesson before camp begins so the instructor can place the camper with an appropriate horse.

If you believe your child may be interested in attending a camp, please email Ridefireflyfarm@hotmail.com to schedule a private lesson. Remember, it is mandatory that the camper have at least one private lesson before camp begins so the instructor can place the camper with an appropriate horse. We also require a $50 down payment at time of sign-up which goes toward the cost of the camp.
